Prototype is the initial conversation between two distinct Indianapolis artists, Rebekah Nolan and Cory Robinson. Through Prototype, the two explore how collaboration can shape artistic expression, open doors to new ways of making, and create resonating outcomes. This initial collection features a series of three design objects, one wooden case-good and two cast concrete tables. In addition, woodblock prints of figurative explorations will be on view and for sale. While grounded in constraint, these pieces transcend the boundaries of their mediums, offering a sense of ease and resonance that invites others to enter and engage.

Rather than imposing their will on the work, the two let the pieces emerge naturally, guided by a shared curiosity and individual know-how. This approach results in a collection of functional design pieces that blend subtle, figure-based compositions with a craftsperson’s approach to furniture design. Nolan & Robinson’s collaboration challenges the boundaries of minimalism by making the work accessible and inviting to a wide range of spaces and audiences.

Rebekah Nolan, co-founder of Flatland Kitchen Creative Studio, brings over a decade of experience in visual communication and design. Her artistic work invites viewers into a world of curiosity and dialogue through her multidisciplinary approach. Rebekah’s work invokes a nuanced familiarity that holds viewers in both question and comfort, subsequently laying the groundwork for connection. This has manifested through works produced for gallery exhibitions, cross-medium collaborations, and public art installations.

Cory Robinson, a professor at the Herron School of Art & Design, Indiana University, is celebrated for his contributions to furniture design and public art. With 25 years of artistic investigation, Robinson's explorations include the creation of functional furnishings, research into unique manufacturing processes and materials, the creation of design objects that relay narratives, and recently the study of form and color that uses modernist sensibilities to underpin his design practice.
